Redhat 3.0 Nagios 1.2 check_nagios problem

Hello All:

I am running Nagios 1.2 and Nagios Plugins 1.3.1.  Everything is
working perfectly except for the check_nagios plugin.  Every 5
minutes the web interface advises Nagios may not be running and all
of my service check options go away.  Nagios is running throughout,
so I'm not sure why the plugin is thinking it's not.  If I killall
- - -HUP Nagios it works again for 5 minutes and then dies.

This behavior happens whether I run Nagios in daemon mode or not. 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

nagios_check_command=/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nagios
/usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log 5 '/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios'

# ls -al /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log

/usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log

# ps auxw | grep nagios

nagios   14510  0.0  0.0  2432 1396 ?        S    May21   1:23
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
