config file problems

I also have nagios 2.0b2 and 2.0b3 on solaris 9 and it works perfectly.

The syntax of your define section is good as I have the same. How do you
check your configuration ? Did you understand that your command line is
referencing a 'main configuration file', where you find references to
'object definition files'. These two files don't have the same syntax. If
you check an object definition file via the '-v' switch, it won't work and
(I just tried it with my timeperiods.cfg file), you get an error message
like this one :

Error in configuration file '/p2/nagios/etc/timeperiods.cfg' - Line 6 (NULL
value)

I think it is what you are doing. If I am right, look in the documentation,
chapter 'Configuring Nagios'/'Configuration overview'. There, you will find
an explanation of the different types of configuration files and their
relations.
