Embedded Perl

I'm writing a couple additional service checks in
perl. However, I'm getting errors such as:

**ePN 'check_temp' Global symbol "$host" requires
explicit package name at (eval 2) line 14.

Looks to me like some sort of embedded perl error.
Does Nagios support service checks written in perl?
Is there a work around besides compiling the perl
code?
