Problem Monitoring DNS...

Create a command which has your non-recursive server look up a host in a
zone for which it is responsible (e.g. NOT www.yahoo.com) and use that
command in the service that you use to monitor that server.

A non-recursive DNS server will not return an address for www.yahoo.com
(unless it's yahoo's).
