File and directory permissions ?

I can execute the check_ping and the check-host-alive via the command line when logged in as root but Nagios doesn't seem to be able to get any data back from any commands.
 
I think I might have a permissions issue.
 
Can anyone direct me to a web page that contains the permissions that should be on the Nagios directories and the Nagios files?
 
Am I making this too hard? Should everything just by set to owner nagios and group nagios? What about the rwx settings at the file level?
