Unable to see icons in on statusmap.cgi from hostextinfo.cfg

I have a number of icons in the images directory ready to go.
I have hostextinfo.cfg setup using nagiosmap.pl
For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get Nagios to actually use the
hostextinfo.cfg file. I put the appropriate refrence in cgi.cfg to the file.
When I do a Nagios -v, it never mentions touching hostextinfo.cfg, and a
strace confirms that it doesn't touch it.
I have Nagios compiled to use MySQL for a few things, but not for extinfo.

./configure --with-mysql-xdata --with-mysql-status --with-mysql-comments
--with-mysql-retention --with-mysql-downtime --with-mysql-perform

I don't suppose anyone could point out what I am doing wrong?
