advanced event handlers

Many years ago I recall reading about some trivial plans which could
enable one to write a tiny script, monitor the serial port which has
a home-built relay plugged into it. Assuming that the system had
a battery backup, the relay would be connected to a power outlet.
When the outlet power would stop, the relay would trip, thus
permitting the script to follow through to running the shutdown
command.

It would seem possible that if you could use the appropriate pins
on a serial port and connect them to a similar capacity (power-wise)
relay, you could have it disable power to the cable modem for 10
seconds. Once you have that hardware and that script, connecting
it to Nagios should be trivial. This means you get to play the
role of engineer, so be careful that you don't underestimate your
load requirements.

Food for thought.

Disclaimer: If you try this out and something breaks, you get to
keep all the pieces. This includes (but is not limited to) starting
an electrical fire.
