Paint-by-numbers

Basic install is not the problem, that only took me 10hrs. It is getting it
to start monitoring stuff, that was another 10hrs for to get a simple "ping"
test.

People learn by example, detailed example. Reading a config file that has 15
or 20 entries that are not really documented that have links to other cfg
files is not "by example".

You don't hear a golf pro telling you to go "read the golf swing manual" and
email him with questions if your swing doesn't work out.

Nope, detailed example. Since we all can't have our own local "nagios golf
pro" there to help us get our "swing" down, detailed examples are the best
method.

Having 30 people a week sending an email to the list asking the same
question more about "how do i setup a service for X" isn't a good use of
this lists resources when a detailed example would do the trick.

If the amount of work put into the "how-to-install" was applied to
configuring the services and other areas, then the docs would totally ROCK!
Hey, it isn't just me, read a review of Nagios in Linux Mag or some other
reviewers.

If I had the time, I would do it, but since I am have to "error by trial" my
way through nagios, my time is wasting! :)

thanks

Just wanted to add my two cents.. As far as I was concerned, nagios has
wonderful documentation, as it did when it was netsaint. The examples in
the cfg files are usually all you need. As for relationships between them,
well its very commen sense if you think about it, and look at the examples.

As for the rest of the installation/config. A read through the manual and
you'll have it. It gives you the commands to execute and everything. Maybe
this is just me, but saying the docs are bad is a bit harsh. If you
actually read them, and have a basic knowledge of the os you are working
with, in this case linux, then I dont see the problem.
