No Lock File Foudn In...

I have installed Nagios 1.0 (non-beta) onto a Red Hat 8.0 computer.
The installation appeared to go by without a problem. However, when
I try to automatically or manually start the program via the init script,
the following error occurs:

NO LOCK FILE FOUND IN /USR/LOCAL/NAGIOS/VAR/NAGIOS.LOCK.

Is this file automatically created or do I need to manually create one? If
the latter is true, will the touch command be sufficient? Thanks.
