You can run the check on the monitored server either in cron
(Unix/Linux) or in the scheduler (Windows) and push the check result
back to Nagios using nsca.

Typically, I would edit the backup script itself if that's possible
and have it push it's status back to Nagios using NSCA rather than
scraping a log file for it.
