Ok.  What you're *trying* to do is create a "Nagios Configuration
Builder" Interface, for the specific subtask of building configs to
monitor public facing services off of a given server.

Now, if this is *not* a homework problem for a class somewhere, your
best bet is probably to look at the already extant frameworks for
building Nagios configs.  They're all mostly 2.x compatible at the
moment, but I gather some of them, at least, are being updated.

As for extending them, I'd recommend looking into nmap and
/etc/services to determine what's available publically to monitor.
 
If this *is* a homework problem... it's your *homework*, dude.  :-)
