I haven't had to do this, but supposing that there is no existing Nagios
plugin, here's how I would proceed:

I'll bet wget and/or curl would support doing this from the command
line. Then just wrap it in a shell script to create a Nagios plugin.

If curl or wget won't oblige you, or you just want to get fancier, try
the Perl module LWP as a basis for a plugin.
