Weird PerfParse errors ("fixed" with kill -9 NagiosPIDs)

I am getting tons of errors in Nagios (CentOS 4, Nagios 2.10) while
integrating PerfParse

e.g.

Error: Command 'process-host-perfdata' has already been defined
Error: Could not register command (config file
'/etc/nagios/perfparse/etc/nagios_perfparse.cfg', starting on line 19)

The only
way that I can seem to fix the errors from "nagios -v" is to kill -9
all Nagios processes I find with "ps -ef | grep nagios"

Then I start it up, and it's "ok" (warnings, but still starts ok).

Any suggestions as to why this is the case?
