Both tests have the same errormessage? 

I tested here and the default check_pop command failed with the same error as 
you have. 
Our POP-Servers are using a SSL connection and refuse everything else. The 
check_pop plugin has the option -S or --ssl for an SSL-connection to the 
server. After setting this I got an OK from the plugin. Maybe this is the 
same on your side and maybe a similar problem with the SMTP-check?
