Is the device visible from the network in any way at all? Or is it  
possible to configure the device to have an ip address?

If not, you will need to get creative. Maybe create some kind of  
direct serial or usb connection between the nagios monitoring server  
and the monitored hardware. Then write a custom plugin to check the  
connection.
