The check is failing and it says "MSSQL$: Unknown". It certainly appears that the dollar sign in the service name is causing a problem. I've tried quoting the service name and escaping the $ with a backslash. No luck so far. Any ideas?

If memory serves me well you need to double the bill. In other words use
$$ in your definition to signify a $.

If you want to be sure: Check the archives of this list.
