I'd say it depends on your definition of 'large'. We had equal problems
with Nagios 1 and 2 on FreeBSD 5.x with more than around 6000 services
IIRC. Ended up running the masters on FreeBSD 4 and the distributed
slaves on 5.x, which seemed to cope for a while. But at around
8000-10000 monitors, it failed to cope completely. Finally gave up and
switched to Debian (much better)
