Hello Norman,

can you send me your Nagios notification command ? I have it working, so

it should work. I had it working with embedded perl on Nagios 2.0b3 and
on Nagios 2.0rc2 and without embedded perl on Nagios 2.3.1

Read the archives. Check:
 - selinux
 - httpd config. (Show us the exact changes)
 - apache logs

Any reason why you did not use Dag Wiers packages?

Jacob,

I noticed the same thing today.

We run a few distributed servers that do about 150 checks (at the
moment) and submit this to our central server.

That's allot of send_nsca processes that get spawned.

I like you fix!

send_nsca would not appear to be scallable for those running lots of
passive checks with distributed systems.

How are you guys running the nsca daemon? I've got systems that perform
thousands of checks with no problem.

I'm looking at a system right now that submits over 5300 checks to a
central server running nsca via xinetd, and it has a average service
latency of .153 secs.=20

Are you not referring to the server end? I am running nsca as a daemon.

We are referring to the client end that sends the results.

This has been discussed to death. I'd suggest use google and look around

see what is out there - try them out because
everyone has difference preferences to what will work for them.

        There's the rub, I bet. If you run nsca as a daemon, it only
allows one connection per instance, whereas running it via inetd (or
setting up smf to handle multiple instances) will spawn enough
instances to handle any ingress.
       Thanks for the hint, Patrick. I'm currently in the process of
converting the old Nagios server I inherited into a distributed system
and will certainly keep this caveat in mind during the buildout.
       I do think there's value in my hack, though I'll probably not
use it in the future until we start to feel the hit from many, many
check results coming in. It seems to save on cpu and bandwidth
because it doesn't have to set up a new call for each individual check
result. This logic should, I feel, tie in with the
aggregate_status_updates setting in nagios.cfg, but I've not dug
through the source yet and don't know if doing so would overload that
feature..

Thanks to all for the insight.

Jacob

From: "Norman Harebottle" <nharebottle at vikus.com>
To: "Frederik Vanhee" <frederik.vanhee at perso.be>
Cc: <nagios-users at lists.sourceforge.net>

I have saved the file in /usr/bin but have also tried having it in
/usr/local/bin and it does not make a difference.

The name of the script on my machine is "notify-jabber" and the
notification command that I have tried in the nagios configuration is
the following:

# This command is used to notify recipients of service problems:
# 'notify-by-jabber' command definition
define command{
        command_name    notify-by-jabber
        command_line    /usr/bin/notify-jabber $CONTACTADDRESS1$
"$HOSTNAME$/$SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$\r\nAdditional Info:
$SERVICEOUTPUT$"
}

# This command is used to notify recipients of host problems:
# 'host-notify-by-jabber' command definition
define command{
        command_name    host-notify-by-jabber
        command_line    /usr/bin/notify-jabber $CONTACTADDRESS1$
"$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$ is $HOSTSTATE$\n$HOSTOUTPUT$"
        }

I have configured the Jabber recipients as follows in my contact
configuration:

# This defines the generic template
define contact {
        name                            system-administrator

        host_notification_period        24x7
        host_notification_options       d,u,r
        host_notification_commands
host-notify-by-epager,host-notify-by-jabber

        service_notification_period     24x7
        service_notification_options    w,u,c,r
        service_notification_commands
notify-by-epager,notify-by-jabber

        register                        0
        }

# This defines a specific contact instance
define contact {
        use                             system-administrator

        contact_name                    [joe]
        alias                           [joe blow]

        pager                           [pager email address]
        address1                        [joeblow at jabber.mydomain.net]
}

I appreciate any insight you can offer!

Hello Norman,

can you send me your Nagios notification command ? I have it working, so
it should work. I had it working with embedded perl on Nagios 2.0b3 and
on Nagios 2.0rc2 and without embedded perl on Nagios 2.3.1

Thanks Jorg.

I actually have it working ( /me waits for applause and confetti) with =
one minor issue. Whats the nagios.cmd file it needs in order to restart
=
nagios?

I have to admit, NagiosQL isn't grabbing me. Seeing the options laid out
=
on a page makes my knees weak. Saying that, I *think* I have my first =
win32 nrpe client working, so if that's the case, I will get time to sit
=
down and look over NagiosQL.

I have to admit, my decision as to which front end was made by which has

the easiest instructions :)

Folks

I have a 3rd party notification application that requires the Nagios =
output $SERVICEOUTPUT$
Not to contain any spaces in it, e.g convert the spaces to a "_" =
underscore character.

Is there a easy way with in Nagios to do this.
Or should I write a Script to do this and then pass on the =
$SERVICEOUTPUT$ to the 3rd party application.

FYI
The current notification looks like

# 'notify-by-sccalert' command definition

I didn't have any luck getting any of the Perl based Jabber scripts to
work. I kept getting an error in one of the XMPP modules.

Working
=09
=09
	Hello Everyone,
	=20
	I am wondering if anyone has had success getting the Jabber
Notification script written by David Cox to work.
	=20
	I have a user called nagios under which nagios runs and using
"su nagios" (on Debian) I can run the script and it notifies just fine.
So I am concluding that it is not a security related issue nor a script
execution error since it works correctly. However, when running the
Perl script in the Embedded Perl environment, something happens (which
is not logged) which causes the script to not execute as desired.
	=20
	Can anyone point me in the direction of a logging directive to
enable so that I can see any Perl errors that may be generated in the
process?
	=20
	Current nagios.cfg logging settings:
	log_archive_path=3D/var/log/nagios/archives
	log_event_handlers=3D1
	log_external_commands=3D1
	log_file=3D/var/log/nagios2/nagios.log
	log_host_retries=3D1
	log_initial_states=3D0
	log_notifications=3D1
	log_passive_checks=3D1
	log_rotation_method=3Dd
	log_service_retries=3D1
	use_syslog=3D1
=09
	Abbbreviated contents of /var/log/nagios2/nagios.log:

=09
	I appreciate any insight into this problem would be appreciated.
