disable email notifications

Do you want to disable all email alerts or just for a few services ?

Greetings,
I'm currently running Nagios 2.4 and have
a need to temporarily disable email alerts,
but nothing seems to be working, short of
stopping sendmail. 

I have the following variables set:

enable_notifications=0
use_retained_program_state=0

I've restarted Nagios, cleared out the object.cache
file, yet Nagios is still sending out alerts.
This is really annoying and shouldn't be so
difficult.

Can someone please shed some light on how to easily
accomplish this task?  I've currently shutdown 
sendmail to workaround this annoyance.
