Alert messages as files?

I'm in the early stages of evaluating Nagios 2.0 for broader use in
our environment, and one of the negative aspects for me is the
current approach for defining alert messages. I would much rather
have them defined individually outside the configuration files, but
still (obviously) allowed to reference macros.

It occurred to me that one relatively straightforward solution would
be to define an external helper that could parse alert files, looking
for macro invocations and replacing the values with data from the
NAGIOS_ environment variables.

Rather than reinvent the wheel: are there any such tools floating
around in the Nagios ecosystem?

Alternatively, is anyone aware of a good reason to not take this
approach?

Thanks.
