NRPE no output returned from plugin

By the way, I just wanted to say that this led me to the solution to
my problem.  I'd been working solely with the cfg files in
/etc/nagios, and had overlooked that nagios.cfg sets
/etc/nagios-plugins as a cfg_dir, which is where I found the original
check_nrpe definition, changed the file name from check_nrpe.cfg to
check_nrpe.cfg.off, uncommented my original check_nrpe definition in
/etc/nagios/checkcommands.cfg, and it all started working as I'd
originally expected.

So thanks, everyone, for the pointers, and especially to Patrick for
the one that helped me figure out where my mistake was!
