controlling notifications a bit better

Thanks marc, but no go :(

Here is my config. If this host is down I get an alert within a min or
so of starting nagios.

Can you see why in my config? Cheers

That should do it. Make sure you don't have multiple nagios processes
running. Post config sections if you need further help.

~12 minute delay to notification --
    max_check_attempts             4
    retry_check_interval           3
