Nagios Failover system with state sync - possible?

Is it possible to have a nagios setup in which the state information on
monitored hosts is continuously synced from master to slave such that in
the event of failover to the slave all state data will be retained?  

The model I have in my head is of the way MySQL maintains real-time replication between a master and slave and can thus handle failovers gracefully via heartbeat.
