Hm -- this is not an improvement.  This now guarantees that you can't you
old-style printf command lines, but instead have to pass everything to a
script and perform if/then/else.  Normally I wouldn't mind, but the *ONLY*
reason this is necessary is because the information was moved into another
variable.
