notify-by-email $OUTPUT$ problem

I am having difficulty getting anything to appear in my $OUTPUT$
 variable within email notifications.  All other parameters show
 up correct, but all I receive in the $OUTPUT$ variable is a dollar
 sign '$'.



Here is my defined command for notify-by-email:



define command {

command_name    notify-by-email

command_line	/usr/bin/printf "%b" "Test: $OUTPUT$" | /bin/mail -s
 '$SERVICESTATE$ alert for $HOSTALIAS$/$SERVICEDESC$' $CONTACTEMAIL$

}
