multple nagios daemons

I recently reinstalled Nagios 1.2 and when I check out the process list
there are tons (80 - 250) of nagios processes. These are not just the
check scripts, which I would expect, they are the '/usr/local/bin/nagios
-d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg' processes. When I run
'/etc/init.d/nagios stop' it stops the initial process, but I still have
all these other ones hanging around and have to run a 'killall nagios'
to stop them.

Before I did the reinstall there was always just one nagios daemon
running. Any ideas why I have so many?
