statusmap cgi, green crosshairs on hosts?

can anyone tell me, on the statusmap cgi page, what are those ugly
green crosshairs over hosts mean? do they serve a purpose? cuz a few
of my hosts have them all the time and not just when the host is
selected.

also. is there a way to modify the circular markedup display? its a
nice display but the hosts in the inner most ring are so cramped
together while there seems to be way more room for spacing.
