Problems with https testing

Nagios version 1.2
check_http (nagios-plugins 1.4) 1.81

Problem:

running 
	
	check_http --ssl -H hostname.here.com

Returns
	
	HTTP OK HTTP/1.1 200 OK - 1515 bytes in 0.023 seconds
|time=0.023235s;;;0.000000 size=1515B;;;0

However, when run inside Nagios, Nagios returns the error:
	
	CRITICAL - string not found

Why would the Nagios test fail when the command runs okay from the
command line?
