Getting notifications from hosts even though parent is down.

We're in the process of doing a fresh 2.0b3 install under SuSE-9.0

I'm getting down notifications for a bunch of hosts like:

***** Nagios  *****

Notification Type: PROBLEM
Host: labwin72.cs.utah.edu
State: DOWN
Address: 155.98.70.82
Info: CRITICAL - Plugin timed out after 10 seconds

Date/Time: Wed May 11 16:00:16 MDT 2005

Even though their host defs have:

define host{
        use                      generic-host
        host_name                labwin72.cs.utah.edu
        alias                    Labwin72
        address                  155.98.70.82
        parents                  x-emcb.cs.utah.edu
        check_command            check-host-alive
        max_check_attempts       10
        notification_interval    120
        notification_period      24x7
        notification_options     d,r
        contact_groups           admins
}

And the parent host (switch) is down and shows up under blocking outages. 
There are no errors/warnings when running the config through nagios -v. Am I 
missing something?
