Close - then I get this:

bash-2.03$ gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -I/usr/local/mysql/include -L. test.c
-lmysqlclient -L/usr/local/mysql/lib/mysql -lz -lnsl -lsocket
Undefined first referenced
 symbol in file
floor
/usr/local/mysql/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.a(password.o)
ld: fatal: Symbol referencing errors. No output written to conftest
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Thanks - it's getting close!
Brian

You need to add -lnsl and -lsocket to the compile libs.
