I've observed a similar condition, albiet briefly on my Solaris monitor.
I'm using 2.03b, on Solaris 10, and usually start|stop|restart from the
/etc/init.d/nagios script.

I've observed conditions where the stop|restart doesn't kill all the
processes, and I have to go back and kill -9 before starting. I had one
check process that seemed stuck in that manner, and a restart after
killing remedied the problem.

I've also seen, again, just once, where a check hung the interface on
the target, and an up|down cleared that one pretty fast. (RSC cards rock!)
