Check_email_loop.pl: Why Lost e-mails?

I'm having problems using check_email_loop.pl. I have it running, ver
1.1, and it works great for a while, but then I start getting warnings
about lost e-mails. I never seem to have a problem with pending
e-mails.

WARNING: 1 mails on POP3, 1 mail(s) came back, 0 pending, 18 lost.

The ID's for the lost emails are in the stat file. When the warning
occurs, I check the email loop manually, and it works fine. I've check
to make sure that items are not queued on the internal server. I've
confirmed that spam filters are not catching the items.

Here's my command line:

/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_email_loop_comcast.pl
-poph=mail.comcast.net -pa=xxxxxxxx -popu=xxxxxxxx -smtph=x.x.x.x
-from=nagios at norcalmutual.com -to=xxxxxxxx at comcast.net
<mailto:-to=xxxxxxxx at comcast.net> -lostw=10 -pendw=10 -lostc=20
-pendc=20 -statfile=/usr/local/nagios/etc/email.stat

Could this be a timing issue? Once an item is declared lost, does the
script ever clean up after itself or clear the stat file?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Nagios 1.1 running on FreeBSD ver 4.x
