Wrong reading given by nagios

Dear all,
           I am using Nagios nagios to monitor uptime of few routers and switches etc.
I am getting two false readings from Nagios.
1.) Sometimes it says as time to live exceeded When i have configured 95% and 700ms in critical state of check_ping.
2.)Secondly I am not getting any notification mails from the monitor.

Plz suggest.
