Nagios and Bacula....

Gerd,

I prefer my approach ;-)

... but I can even explain why, and perhaps that allows people to decide
which approach they use.

1. Although snmp needs it's own security considerations, I prefer using
it over ssh or the NSClient, because snmp is already part of (all) major
OSes and needs no extra installation. Especially important if you're
checking windows hosts that are operated by other people.

1.a) I don't have to install nagios' plug-ins on the hosts to monitor.

2. With snmp I can use the same check_commands for different OSes.

3. The passive check approach allows the freshness checking to be done
by nagios itself, without need to access baculas catalog.

4. The perl script is, for my taste, too heavy in terms of dependencies
and load. After all, everything it does can be done by a combination of
bacula's director, some lines of shell code (which _could_ be
transformed to C, but not by me :-) and nagios - all of this is already
where I need it. Well, you should know that I never tried embedded perl
in nagios.
