Macros Available as Environmental Variables

Hi,
As per the Nagios2 documentation, the Macros are now available as Environmental Variables. Does that mean I can have a Perl\Shell Script executed by a Cronjob that can access these variables ?
I am interested in the Macros $TOTALSERVICESCRITICAL$. Can an external script access this variable's value ? If yes, can someone point me to how (I am not a Unix Expert..!) ?
