Today I wanted to change the directory structure where my config files
are located and put all the information about a host into one file
(host, service, hostgroup, hostextinfo). I ran into the same problem.
If I add the hostgroup info to the configuration file where I define
the host/service/...  info, I get the same error message as mentioned
above. That means that I have to add this info on two places, the
hostgroup file and the host definition. That is indeed a bit annoying.

BTW: where can I find a bug tracking tracking for nagios
