1.3: Cannot ping a host, so how do I tell if i t is "up"?

Keep in mind that you can't pass arguments to a hostcheck command.
(see Marcos page in docs)
What I do is create a few alternative hostcheck commands using check_tcp.

check-host-alive-22
check-host-alive-80
