In my case, a further wait is what I want. For example, I might have
a particular service in a warning state for a while. I want to leave
it as a warning so I can see that it might need attention. However,
sometimes the service check might time out; then I get an immediate
notification, which is not what I want.

I suppose I could patch the source. Are there any resources out there
on hacking nagios warnings and notifications?
