The check_smtp plugin in that release is a pretty simple plugin that connects to the SMTP server, looks for the banner then disconnects, that's it. It doesn't have any functionality to actually begin or complete an SMTP transaction, which would be required to avoid that error. Those errors are harmless and informational only as far as sendmail is concerned. If you're really concerned about them the same plugin in the 1.4 release has enhanced functionality to start an SMTP session or you might want to look at the check_email_loop.pl plugin in the contrib directory.
