Subject: [Nagios-users] Nagios 2.0b3 sub processes on starting

Hi all,

When Nagios 1.2 starts it seems to not spawn any children apart from
checks being run.

I'm running up a dev envrionment of Nagios 2.0b3 on Debian stable. When
Nagios starts there seems to be a parent and two child processes run on
startup. Is this the default behaviour?

When the init script kills the parent PID, only one of the children
dies, there still exists a child and the parent process. Killing the
parent process ID again will then kill the parent and the remaining
child process. Is this what other Nagios administrators have experienced?
To get around this problem I added:
sleep 1
kill $NagiosPID
to the kill_nagios subroutine in the init script.

TIA,

Subject: [Nagios-users] NagMIN

Hi,

According to the NagMIN site (http://nagmin.sourceforge.net/)
NagMIN is
for version 1.0 of Nagios. Will this version support Nagios 1.2? I
assume it
won't work for Nagios 2.0, is this correct?

Does anyone know of any other graphical configurators for Nagios?

Regards,

	Michael

You need a WAP Browser [or a WAP (WML 1.1) supported device e.g.
Mobile/PDA] not an internet Browser
e.g. WinWap (I think commercial, but trial).

It's nice that Opera supports WML (I didn't know). IMHO IE & Mozilla
doesn't do it

cheers

Subject: [Nagios-users] Authentication problems for accessing CGI

Hello,
It's the second time I install nagios and I've found an error that I
didn't have the first time(just a couple weeks ago). I can
authenticate user nagios in the web browser but then when I try to see
service or host information I get this message:

"It appears as though you do not have permission to view information
for any of the hosts you requested... If you believe this is an error,
check the HTTP srver authentication requirements for accessing this
CGI and check the authorization options in your CGI configuration
file."

Things that I've done:
I've used "htpasswd" to create the user "nagios" so I can
authenticate. I've edited cgi.cfg to give this user authorization to
everything, but I don't get out of this error.

Thank you Scott and Erwin for your input.

Erwin was right, I had seen the information on developing plugins and
what it said about return codes previously.
I thought since I was using an existing plugin and just adding to the
output the return codes would be in tact. The return codes from the
plugin were getting trapped in the perl wrapper.

I still don't know how to catch a return code from the plugin, but by
doing some string comparisons on the plugin output I can generate a
return code from the perl wrapper.

Thanks again for your help, you input made me a happy guy when this
stuff started working around midnight :<).

You need to grab the return value from check_snmp. It will be 0, 1, 2,
or 3.
The wrapper script needs to return the same value in order to have
Nagios
process it.

Capture the value of the built-in special variable $? immediately after

Unless you avoided the documented method and added your webserver to the
nagios group and restarted your web server you haven't configured
external commands properly --

Did you create the .htaccess file in nagios's sbin directory? That's the =
most likely. Also, does nagios see you logged in as the correct user =
(look for "Logged in as" in the upper left box.

Please verify that your stanza for the cgi-bin dir in your apache
httpd.conf looks similar to this:

<Directory /pathto/nagios/sbin/>
    AllowOverride AuthConfig =20
    Options ExecCGI
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
</Directory>

Also verify that the user that apache is running as is in the same
group as the nagios user if you are recieving this message when trying
to write to the external command file. Hope this helps.

handle?

Has anyone else delt with users of the system forgetting to turn back on
notifications/checks for machines?

This has happened several times, and I was thinking about writing a
check that will notify someone if a box has had notifications off for
more than X timeframe.

I was also thinking about a way to require comments on every action.
That would be helpful in determining what is happening.

I just wanted to hear if anyone else has delt with these problems, and
maybe there is a solution I'm missing.

Thank you.=20

Hi all, just wanted to let you know your favourite Nagios

bugfix release containing a lot of corrections and code updates.=20
Also, it supports additional fields found for Nagios 2.0b3. Lots of
people contributed to this release, and I think it's gotten a lot more

These all look good. Can you provide the status information for a
command when it returns an unknown status? I'd also try executing the
command above in a while loop at the command line and echo the exit
status. It's possible that there is other output that you are not seeing
through nagios that is causing the problem or that is at the least
informative.

It seems from the documentation there is no way to specify a contact group =
in
the cgi.cfg authorization lines.

Is there anyway to define a group and use it? I'd like to define one for
sysadmins, one for NOC and one for the support staff, and just put those in
the right auth lines rather then having to add a sysadmin to 4 lines each
time...

Thanks.

I know this probably isn't the proper forum to ask for help on this, so
please disregard if you like.

I currently use Nagios to monitor my network. I'd also like to tie in the
alarm system on my datacenter so that I get a page if the door is opened.
I've decided that the easiest way to do this without funding would be with a
serial loopback connector connected to the siren output on my alarm with a
normally closed relay. The idea is that the loopback connector will be
wired across a normally closed relay, completing the loop. If an alarm
condition occurs with the security system, tripping the siren will also trip
the relay, interrupting the serial loopback connected to one of my Windows
servers.

The problem is, I am not a programmer. I know it should only take 5-10
lines of code to accomplish what I need. What I would like is a small
program that transmits arbitrary data across the serial loopback connection.
If that connection is broken, then a file like "alarm.txt" will be written
to the hard drive. Using the Check_nt pluigin to check for the presence of
this file will cause Nagios to send email and page alarms.

So to sum up:

Data loops continuously through serial loop

If loop interrupted: write alarm.txt file

Seems like it would be easy code to write, but like I said, I'm not a
programmer at all.

I've written about this issue before on this forum, but the suggestions I
received required purchasing hardware and software my budget does not allow.
If anyone has suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

What configuration issues are you running into?

What are you trying to accomplish? Under normal circumstances you'd just
add them as a contact for the hostgroups that they're responsible for.
The authorization lines in cgi.cfg are generally for the special
exceptions.=20

Under what circumstances are you disabling notifications? If a host or
service is down and you don't want to receive further notifications,
acknowledge it. If you have upcoming maintenance and you don't want to
be notified, use scheduled downtime. Both of those actions require
comments which are associated with the host or service. Nagios will
automatically re-enable notifications when the host/service recovers or
comes out of scheduled downtime.

Taylor,

Are the archives available for the fruity ML? I'm trying to figure
out
the easiest way to allow the export function to write to the
/usr/local/nagios/etc directory without changing permissions or having
to run a separate web server as the nagios user. I hoped to find some
info in the ML archives.

Tailor,

Can you let me know what the value is for the parameter ['doc_root'], if =
I
use the "localhost" as the value for the parameter ['host'], and the
installation directory for fruity is "/home/cguo/fruity-0.7.5",

Thanks,

Chris

The ['doc_root'] parameter is the url root of the fruity installation.
So for example, if your document root for your webserver is
/usr/local/www/docs, and you have fruity installed in a subdirectory
there called fruity, then docroot would be /fruity/

NOC should be able to do commands for any host or any service, as well as t=
he
'extended info' (they need to be able to view the event log).

The Support Center should be able to view all hosts and services, but not r=
un
commands.

All core Sysadmins should be able to view all and and run commands on any h=
ost
regardless of whether we're the contact for it.

Then all other tech contacts only need access to their own hosts.

Here's how I've done it:

Define 3 contact groups: NOC, Support, and Sysadmins, plus contact
groups for each of your "other tech contacts."
Create each of the users in each of the groups
Create an .htgroup file with two groups, one for "full access" and one
for "read-only." You can call them anything, of course. Then make your
.htaccess file look something like this:

AuthName "Nagios Access"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /usr/local/nagios/etc/htpasswd.users
AuthGroupFile /usr/local/nagios/etc/htpasswd.groups
require valid-user
<Files cmd.cgi>
require group administrators
</Files>

Be sure that you put a copy of that in the nagios/share and nagios/sbin
directories. The "administrators" group is the "full access" group you
defined in your .htgroup file. This will allow your "full access"
people to run external commands, but will prevent your "read-only" users
from doing so.

Seems unnecessarily complicated, and resource consuming, to continuously
send a data stream and monitor that it comes back OK. Most people would
stick the relay on one of the control lines like DTR or CTS which set
flags depending upon presence or absence.

> connected to one of my Windows servers.

Ah, forget I said anything. Windows probably doesn't let you get at the
control lines any more. Not easily, anyway. Checking the "fire" button
on the games port may (or may not) be a simpler task under Windows.

Doing all that in 5-10 lines of code? I doubt it. You could probably
detect a change on DTR or CTS in 5-10 lines of code (using a reasonably
"compact" language like perl, on a decent OS like Linux). Doing what you
want on Windows is likely to be a little more complex. Oh, and if you use
MS programming tools then you can expect the binary to be about 2M in size
even if there are only 5-10 lines of code (c.f., regedit which could be
squeezed into a binary of around 100K but because of the cruft the MS tools
drag in - unless you explicitly tell them not to - ends up around 2M).

Subject: [Nagios-users] check_by_ssh, snmp, and nrpe; Oh my!

Greetings folks,

I've spent my week installing, configuring, toying with, and reading a ton
about Nagios.2b. I have everything so far the way I want it for localhost,
and ~25 hosts, 8 hostgroups, yada yada yada... I am using apache 1.3.3x
ssl/tsl, nagios20b3 on Solaris10, gd 2.0.33, and check_by_ssh
(OpenSSH.4.0p1)(passwordless) running just fine on my unix boxes. (actually,
I can't seem to get statuswrl.cgi to work right, but I'm ok without a vrml
view :))

I am looking to move onto remote monitoring for tru64(SGI's), VMS, cisco
switches, symantec firewall appliance, and windows 2k/2k3 next. I have about
250 devices total. My questions are simple, I know the answers are not.

I cannot use SSH on all of those, so I realize I'm going to have to use
nrpe, or snmp. I'm leaning toward snmp on everything (removing the
check_by_ssh stuff), but wanted to hear from the group first.

Are there other options?
What is the cleaner method? [nrpe|snmp|other]
What option has less of a network footprint?
Which is more secure? Securable?
Which is more scalable if my hosts double from ~250->500?
Which is a waste of time for ~250-500 hosts?
Which is cooler in that whole "ooooo, nagios with xxxx <drool, drool,
drool>" category?

Thank you folks. Your time, as well as your responses are greatly
appreciated.

-Marc
