check_by_ssh. NRPE. NSCA. If the monitoring server needs to initiate it,
that would be check_by_ssh or NRPE. If circumstances keep that from
happening, there's NSCA. All of these are well documented on the main Nagios
site.

Pick your poison, and those are just some of the "official" ways. Any scheme
you can concoct that will have your monitoring server respond to a return
code of 0-3 and a line of text from the remote host will work -- even an
RFC-1149/2549-compliant network.
