not getting email alerts

I am having lots of problems in getting email alerts. I am sure that all the configuration files of contacts, hosts, groups are all OK.
 
I have configured sendmail.mc like
 
      define('SMART_HOST','mail server IP')
 
Do I have to configure something else? The internal mail server accepts SMTP but I am not getting notification alerts.
