Running java plugins in nagios

Java is a resource hog in starting up. If you run the plugins bay calls 
to a tomcat application server, the overhead can be more reasonable.

I haven't done it with nagios plugins, but it seems like it might be a 
practical way to leverage the tools without the performance issues you 
refer to.
