Socket timeout after 10 seconds

i have a strange problem with timeouts. i´m using nagios 1.2 with
apan/nrpe/ssh for these checks.

Nagios Service-Check timeout:	120 sec.
nrpe plugin-timeout:		90 sec. (configured in apan)
ssh plugin-timeout		90 sec. (configured in apan)
the service-check itself has no timout value.

any idea where these timouts come from?
