Yes. The 'parent' relations also fill the purpose of determining network 
outages, so misconfiguring them on purpose will land you with all sorts 
of problems the day you actually get a network outage. The status map 
also helps you see the route the network packets nagios sends (in a 
manner of speaking) has to take, which is very helpful if you want to 
configure your firewalls and such.

No, but you can (if you've got a lot of spare time) specify 2d_coords in 
the hostextinfo object for each host. That way you can have correct 
parent/child relations and still get the network map drawn the way you 
like (except that all connecting lines are the same size, and all lines 
are drawn straight).
