I remember having read something about this but it may be some time ago.

Maybe search this archive, and the netsaint-archive with keywords like
"voice" (because you need a voice-modem, apparently).

Voice-output could be done via festival/festivox.


Thinking about it - you could use Asterisk for this nowadays - but I
think it is definitely a project for someone with a lot of time to kill.

But it would be a lot of fun.
