Nagios 1.2 - Status Log warning

Hi there - I still can't seem to shift this problem - I get the cgi 
complaing about Nagios maybe not running and my check Nagios also has the 
same.

My check_nagios is

# 'check_local_nagios' command definition
define command{
        command_name    check_nagios
        command_line    $USER1$/check_nagios /opt/nagios/var/nagios.log 5 
'/opt/nagios/bin/nagios'
        }

which seems like the default to me and my cgi check is

nagios_check_command=/opt/nagios/libexec/check_nagios 
/opt/nagios/var/nagios.log 5 '/opt/nagios/bin/nagios'

Any ideas how i can 'force' an update of the nagios.log every minute or so?
