Question about dependency setup

I have about 15 Linux hosts that are connected to the Linux server that runs 
Nagios via VPN tunnels (using vtun). I monitor about 6 services on each host.

Yesterday my tunnels went down and I got about 50 SMS messages that flooded my 
phone....and I would like to avoid that again!

I am thinking that I can setup a service for each host to ping the servers VPN 
IP address and have the services of that host be 'dependant' on this check. 
Can I do this using the 'check_host_alive' command that is already defined 
for each host or do I need to setup a separate service?
