You must remember to export it, or add it to the command-line of the 
daemon, as such;
---
export ORACLE_HOME=/var/lib/sid
nrpe -c /etc/nrpe.cfg -d
---

OR

---
ORACLE_HOME=/var/lib/sid nrpe -c /etc/nrpe.cfg -d
---
