check dns problem

I am using the current version of Nagios on a system to check a remote
system. However when the system goes down the Nagios status page still
shows a green status for the DNS servers

$USER1$/check_dns -H www.winnipeg.ca -s $HOSTADDRESS$ -t 60 -a 198.163.51.161

Am using this command for the check_dns and passing as a parameter the
canonical name for the IP address via $HOSTADDRESS$. When the system goes
down Nagios shows "address is null".

Any suggestion on how to have the program show a RED status for the DNS server?
